On 26 October 2001 the second German Big Brother Awards were presented at teh Ravensberger Spinnerei, Bielefeld. In 6 categories, the awards highlighted companies and individuals that abuse personal data or invade privacy. Award categories and winners (links in German) Main award "Politics": Otto Schily, Interior Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany for his "anti-terrorism package" against civil rights and privacy. Business and Finance: The Consulting Corporation "Informa", for the invention and promotion of "scoring"-technologies. Communication: Werner Müller, minister of economy and technology, for his "telecommunication surveillance act". working world surveillance: The software company "ProtectCom", for privacy decreasing applications like "webSpy" and "e-Blaster". Technics / Scene-Award: RealNetworks for the hidden gathering of personal data in their streaming media applications. Regional Award: Hans-Ehrenberg-Gymnasium, a public (secondary) school in Bielefeld, for storing personal data like fingerprints on an electronic payment system called "school-card". |
